Cadbury-Brown family papers, 1804-1900.

Collection primarily contains letters of the interrelated Brown and Cadbury family and addresses family, business and Quaker issues including personal news, health, the sheep and merino wool business of John Brown, a visit of Elias Hicks to the Meeting at Dover, N.H., education and attendance at Quaker Meetings. Correspondents include: Amos Brown, John Brown, Moses Brown, William Brown, Lydia Shinn Cadbury, Richard Cadbury, and Sarah Shinn Cadbury Brown. There is also a mask of Caroline Cadbury Brown taken in her youth. Two brief genealogical charts are also included.

Elias Hicks was an eminent Quaker minister from Jericho, Long Island, N.Y. He was a farmer, partner in a tannery, and had a knowledge of surveying. Elias Hicks was born on March 19, 1748, a birthright member of Westbury Monthly Meeting, New York, and the son of John and Martha (Smith) Hicks. At thirteen he went to live with his older brother and was apprenticed to a carpenter. During this time, he became increasingly devoted to religious principles.
